How to get the most out of your Google Maps app
Google Maps is one of the best navigation apps out there. However, many of us are still missing out on some of its great features. So how can you best utilize Google Maps? Here are a few tips you need to know.
The best ways to utilize Google Maps:
Save your work & home address
I have been using Google Maps for a year now and it still never occurred to me to save my home and work address on it! However, doing so simplifies getting to either place from wherever you are. All you need to do is tap the 3 line menu bar in the search box – then Your Places – and add your work and home addresses.
Add multiple destinations
If you are out and about running chores and you need to get to more than one location, you can always add multiple destinations to a trip. There are two ways to do so:
- Map out your final destination then tap Add Stop from the 3 dot icon in the right top corner. Then go ahead and add a second destination. (You can add up to 9 destinations in total).
- Add a stop along your route while you are on the go. Google Maps will only show you those options within your current route.
Save parking spots
If you are anything like me, you probably forget where you have parked more often than not! This is why you will love the latest version of Google Maps as it allows you to save your parking spot through a pop up that asks you if you’d like to do so. (This is a brand new feature so keep an eye out for it if you don’t have it already).
Bookmark interesting locations
Originally, My Maps was your go to way for saving locations you are interested in visiting, especially when you are planning to go on vacation. However, now you can save your favorite locations on your phone and on the go. All you need to do is search for locations and save them in lists as Favorites, Want to Go or Starred Places.

Check out your history
Here’s something you did not know: Google Maps will save every location you have been to. This is both creepy and useful! To see your navigation history, tap Settings from the 3 line menu button and tap Map History. You can always disable this option by flipping the toggle to Off at the top of your screen.
Use maps offline
Another way to utilize Google Maps is by downloading Maps for offline viewing. This could come in handy when you are traveling and unable to connect to Wi-Fi or your 4G roaming.
Driving or walking around and need to zoom in your map? Instead of pinching your screen, you can use one hand to double-tap your screen then drag your finger up and down to zoom in.
Avoid highways & tolls
When you need to steer away from highways, Google Maps can also help you do so. Just enter your destination, tap the 3 dot icon in the top right followed by the Route options button. Choose what you want to avoid and you are all set.
