The effects of music on the brain & why it matters

Your choice of music can often break or make your day. Moreover, music can actually help change your mood, get you pumped up for your exercises and even help you recover from injury.

So how does that work exactly? And what can you do to make it work to your advantage? Read more below as we explain it to you in a light and fun read.

How music works:

Many unproven theories suggest that music can access deeper pathways between neurons in our brain. But what else is it capable of doing?

  • Music can help patients with brain damage restore knowledge.
  • It can distract your brain from registering your body’s fatigue.
  • It increases your endurance while improving your heart and muscles.
  • Playing a musical instrument can actually make you a smarter person.
  • It can influence the way we dance, think and exercise.
  • It stimulates your body to release dopamine making you feel happy and relaxed.

How can you use music to your advantage?

Below are some of the ways you can use music to your advantage:

  • Recalling memories

Did you know that listening to music you know can help you recall memories? Well, it’s true and here is how. When you listen to a song you know, you stimulate the hippocampus (the part of your brain responsible for long-term storage). By doing so, you can bring out relevant memories you stored when you heard that same song.

  • Boosting your immune system

This might seem insane to you but you can actually use certain songs to boost your immune system. Now you already know that listening to certain soothing songs can decrease the levels of cortisol in your body thus reducing stress. Moreover, upbeat dance songs can help increase the level of antibodies in your system. So if you’re feeling a cold coming on, make sure to create the right playlist you need to get well soon and kick that cold in its behind!

  • Enhancing your exercise

There seems to be a positive correlation between fast paced songs and exercise. As we mentioned above, music helps your body distract attention from the strain of exercise and also pushes your hearts and muscles to work faster and harder. So faster the beat is, the more you will be able to exercise harder and enhance your immune system.

  • Keeping you calm under pressure

If you are feeling stressed out and under pressure, all you need to do is hum a tune you like. This will help decrease your levels of anxiety and prevent you from choking in certain uncomfortable situations. Therefore, if you find yourself prone to worrying and anxiety, listening to a humorous, light-hearted song can make all the difference.

  • Fighting fatigue

Finally, one of the great ways you can use music to your advantage is by using it to help you fight fatigue and increase productivity. For example, if you have a boring job, the right songs can help put you in the right mood while doing it. Moreover, if you are feeling tired, bored and depressed, finding the right upbeat songs can set you in the productive mood.
